Jurgens tends to be a little shaky on openings unless you want a very Jim Shooter kind of opening where there's exposition. Tomasi might be a bit better at beginnings. I think Jurgens and Tomasi are both good at middles. You could hand Kelly anything, say, "Wrap this up in 20 pages" and he could wrap almost anything up in 20 pages. It wasn't always Shakespeare but Loeb is good at setups and Kelly was good at forcing a landing for a story. In the Loeb era, Loeb was strong at opening a mystery, Casey would develop it, Schultz would do world building details, and Kelly could put a button on things. Incidentally, while I think two, twice a month titles sell better unless you can get a name or a strong hook on other titles, one thing I miss about the triangle era and Berganza era 1.0 is that you had neater resolutions. But either way, at this moment Im enjoying what is there but desperately missing what isnt. Im a issue or two behind (oddly, since I read it digitally). Maybe these are things that have been tackled in the last couple issues of SUPERMAN. Im not reading that so maybe Im missing it. Maybe these are things being handled in Action. If Clark Kent cant tackle the complex social issues as a journalist then Superman is only doing half of his job. I still feel that way Superdad and family are endearing and fun, but little is being done with the classic cast or status quo. In the 52 I felt that Superman was handled quite well but everything else wasnt what it could have been. In early post-Crisis I felt we had a great supporting cast and setting but Superman himself was missing something defining.

I feel like DC cant quite get the full picture. The character of Clark Kent is no longer there. The connections to the Planet, Jimmy, and everyone else is no longer there. That's one of the keys to a good Super-story in my opinion it has to be a small, human story on a superhuman scope and the book is pulling that off well enough to satisfy me.īut aside from the huge mess that is Nuperman's death and Superdad's replacing him and the problems with what Superdad was actually (not) doing during his ten years hidden on this new earth, I feel like Im only getting half of a Superman story. The story has been acceptably "Superman" in scope, and Jon's involvement keeps it personal and emotional. Id even go so far as to say that Superdad has avoided many of the pitfalls that ruined the post-Crisis characterization for me. Its been nice to see a older, more seasoned Superman and I really like Jon. The dynamic of Clark and Lois having a son is something I have wanted to see for two decades, and in this regard the book isnt disappointing me in the least.
